BROADWAY'S MY BEAT
Broadway’s My Beat has a been a favorite of old-time radio connoisseurs for decades, perhaps achieving as much popularity in the decades following its broadcast than it ever received when it was on the air. The gritty police drama focusing on New York City detective Danny Clover was one of several such programs in the post-War years and the writing, acting, and music have all held up remarkably well, riveting modern audiences as much as it did the listeners of yesteryear.
The show opened with Thor’s narration, "Broadway’s my beat, from Times Square to Columbus Circle… the gaudiest, the most violent, the lonesomest mile in the world." Dramatic music segued into the program’s title which subsequently gave way to a bluesy “(I’ll Take) Manhattan” that then faded into the street noise of Broadway at night.
Debuting from CBS’ New York studios on February 27, 1949 Broadway’s My Beat moved across the country to the network’s Hollywood studios just a few months later in July. Anthony Ross, the original Detective Danny Clover, stayed behind in New York and the role was assumed by Larry Thor on the West Coast who quickly made it his own. Other New York personnel included John Dietz (director), Lester Gottlieb (producer), and Robert Stringer (music).
In Hollywood, Broadway’s My Beat featured Larry Thor in the lead role of Danny Clover and Charles Calvert as St. Gino Tartaglia. Additionally, the program benefited from the voice talents of many West Coast radio regulars including Jack Kruschen, Herb Ellis, Hy Averback, Harry Bartell, Lawrence Dobkin, and Mary Jane Croft. Music was composed and arranged by Wilbur Hatch and Alexander Courage while up to three sound effects artists created a mosaic of New York City noise. The incomparable Elliott Lewis took over as producer and director while the dynamic writing duo of Morton Fine and David Friedkin cranked out the scripts.
The series’ lack of a sponsor for most of its run contributed to a hectic schedule, with one source identifying at least fifteen different time slots during its five-year run. Even the most dedicated listener would have struggled to keep tabs on the show’s place in the weekly radio line-up. William J. Wrigley co. (Spearmint Gum, 1950, 1951) and Lever Brothers Co. (Lux Soap, June 1952) briefly sponsored Broadway’s My Beat but neither became associated with the program.
Broadway’s My Beat has a distinguished history in the annals of the Old Time Radio Researchers; the series was the focus of a feature article (“Making Headway on Broadway”) in the very first issue of the Old Radio Times published in December 2005. Long-time member David Oxford even back then was making his way through a large number of cassettes to identify mis-named and mis-dated episodes. The series had three separate Certified editions and now the new Maintained set will be its fourth.

OTRR Definitions:
OTRR Maintained Set -- This set contains all known episodes in the best available audio condition with the most accurate dates and titles known to be in general circulation and based on current research at the time of release. Replaces OTRR Certified Accurate and OTRR Certified Complete.
OTRR Non-Maintained Set -- A collection of shows that has not gone through the OTRR Maintenance process.
Pre-2019 OTRR Definitions:
OTRR Certified Accurate -- A series that was "Certified Accurate" indicated that all the episodes were properly identified and labeled based on current information but that the series did not contain all known extant episodes.
OTRR Certified Complete -- A series that was "Certified Complete" achieved the highest level of certification available under the OTRR Certified Standards. This certification level implied that all the files in the series were "Certified Accurate" and also indicated that the series was as complete as possible and included all circulating episodes.
OTRR Non-Certified -- A collection of shows that has not gone through the OTRR Certification process.
Also, beginning in 2019, the version numbers of our OTRR releases changed format -- instead of v1.0 or v2.1, we are now using a version number that reflects the year and month the set was released. The format used is a two-digit year followed by a two-digit month. For example, "v1906" indicates a set that was released in June 2019, or "v1910" indicates a set released in October 2019.
NOTE: There are no passwords for any of our ZIP files. If you are prompted for a password, before downloading the file again, try unzipping the file into a shorter full folder path name -- for example, unzip to "C:\" instead of "C:\Documents and Settings\your_Windows_ID\some_other_folder\". Sorry, some of our releases contain long folder and file names, which sometimes manifests itself on the Windows platform as prompting for a password for the ZIP file. Or try renaming the ZIP file itself to a shorter name before unzipping.

Subject: Ridiculous Dialogue, Even Worse Attempted Poetry
So much of the dialogue is so unrealistic, sometimes extremely pretentious, other times complete nonsense.
Danny Glover sounds like he was born in a Kansas cornfield, yet we are supposed to buy that he is a native New Yorker and hardened detective. Then just to make matters worse he breaks out into full poet mode. He also says creepy things about girls all the time, yes girls not women.
Then there is his boss (I think) Tartaglia who is played like a complete moron. He says even dumber things than Danny Glover!
Jack Kruschen is the only redeeming quality in this mess as Muggavan. He as always is an absolute gem and should be the star.
